The smarter way to overcome your anxiety

If you’ve been following the scientific research being published, you know that what we’ve been discovering about how the mind REALLY works when it experiences anxiety and fear has been staggering.

Advances in Functional Brain Imaging (fMRI) and other technologies now allow us to study precisely what happens in our brains when we’re exposed to something that makes us anxious, as well as ways that we can reverse the process and restore feelings of calm.

One of the significant things that research is showing is that your brain begins the process of becoming anxious far before you’re ever aware of it.  It’s a vicious cycle that occurs based on past experiences, unconscious mental training, and repetition of behaviors, and because by the time you even know it’s happening it’s well underway, it can VERY difficult to control.

However, there’s also some incredibly GOOD news hidden in those facts…

Published research has also shown that just as your brain can have a response that indicates stress at a level below that which you can easily control, you can also CALM your mind virtually automatically by using technologies and tactics that influence brain behavior on a far deeper level that can help you take back control from your anxiety.

Over the course of the past four years, I've been fortunate to be able to work with a talented and passionate team of professionals to take what science and research has shown can have a lasting impact on your stress and anxiety, and develop a comprehensive set of resources and tools for you to learn the skills and use the technologies on your own.

It’s called The Auto Calm System, and you can read all about it and the science behind it’s development here:

How science can help you overcome your anxiety

I've got to tell you, the research that's been taking place in recent years and the advancements it's all led to has been nothing short of incredible and is completely changing much of what we know about anxiety, fear, panic, and human behavior in general.

New technologies have given us the ability to peer inside the mind like never before, and literally WATCH exactly what happens not only when anxiety strikes, but when a feeling of relaxation and calm washes over us and takes it away.

Research from universities and labs around the world is being published that shows that much of what's traditionally been done to help those suffering with anxiety or panic attacks has often been useless at best, and may even make everything WORSE

Ten Things Not to Do While Driving

1. Although I am sure many people have done this, I for one have on several occasions but this is not a good habit to get into.

I have actually seen some people take this to the next level. I once saw a person eating a huge slice of pizza while attempting to hold the steering wheel and trying not to let the pizza drip on their white shirt they were wearing. This was obviously too much for this person to handle as they started to encroach upon my lane and when I honked at them it was almost the death of the slice for that poor man. I also witnessed when I was a passenger in a car a person driving while eating with a fork and a plate. I was impressed of course (and scared to death) I mean that takes great eye and hand coordination I can barely get food in my mouth when I am at the table let alone while trying to maneuver a vehicle. But placing a plate in ones lap and being able to maneuver the vehicle while taking bites of spaghetti of all things is simply amazing.

2. I can completely understand the importance of looking your best wherever you might be going but honestly can you really get your hair looking right or shaving your beard while driving down the street and looking in the rearview mirror?

I don’t think so. I was actually rear-ended by a woman who was brushing her hair while driving. She had actually dropped her brush, tried to retrieve it and BAM! Hit my car. Just recently I have seen more and more men shaving as they are driving down the road obviously on their way to work maybe even woke up late. The amount of time it takes to shave or brush your hair is so short do it before you get in the car or just as you get out while you are parked somewhere; this might not save time but it will sure save you from an accident.

3. The only thing I can think of is more power to you because I am afraid of being poked in the eye while putting on mascara in front of my mirror at home I can only imagine what happens while driving, one wrong move and the worst that can happen is you poke your eye out or else come out looking like a clown in the circus.

I understand that putting on make up takes some time and being able to do it on the drive in will save some time. However how can you concentrate on the road if you are constantly looking in your mirror to make sure you are not messing up? Take a few moments to put your make up on before you start driving or at least when you are at a red light.

4. This is the latest trend that I have been seeing especially since talking on the cell phone without a hands-free kit is against the law in most states.

This trend has got to be the most annoying one. I have heard horror stories about the things that happen when someone is texting while driving. From bus crashes to train crashes and everything in between texting is truly causing major accidents. I even have an acquaintance that is currently recovering from an accident he was in while texting. He now has a steel plate in his leg and has finished almost six months of rehab. His car was totaled all because he just had to send a text while driving. Is that message really that important?

5. Unless you have those new and hip flossers then this is really a two hand activity.

But yet I have seen several people flossing their teeth using their elbows or knees to drive while they make sure their teeth are taken care of. I have also seen people brushing their teeth as well. And while I am all about good oral hygiene I truly think that there is a limit, I mean really people there is a time and a place for everything. I understand that it needs to be done but at least wait until your car is stopped so that you can really get whatever crap there is stuck between your teeth.

6. Now I have changed clothes in the car before just out of necessity but not while driving.

It just seems so simple to pull over change quickly and then get back on the road. When you are changing clothes you are not watching the road, especially if you are pulling a shirt over your head those are precious seconds even moments when you are unable to see anything at all. I can understand if you have to take off your jacket because you are hot but honestly this is something that can be done when you are at a stop just so that you and those on the road are safe.

7. Normally I would never discuss anything of this type but after witnessing more than one person doing this while driving I feel that it is necessary to mention.

Although I am impressed since it takes great hand eye coordination this truly seems like a no brainer. I mean first of all it is completely illegal to do in public and second of all if it is a thrill factor you are seeking try something where other lives are not at risk. It might serve you better to hold that thought until you are in a different location.

8. This goes out to those drivers that eat, drink, talk on the phone and drive all at the same time.

For them it is not simply drive and do something else, no they need to be doing five different things while driving just to increase those chances of something happening. I have to say multitasking period is a difficult venture but doing it while driving is taking it to a completely different level. And while I applaud the efforts I still feel it best if those things were done while the car was at a stop or parked to decrease the chances of something fatal occurring.

9. Now this simply amazes me.

Of course I live by the mantra “Easily Distracted” I even have a shirt that I wear that says just that. Only because it is true I am easily distracted. I enjoy reading a good book just like any one else but I still cannot understand how one can read while driving. I like to get involved in my book and if I get involved in the book then my focus would not be on the road. I am still not sure how someone could completely focus on both possibly because it is impossible. So put down that book and pick up before you go to bed or when you have free time; remember free time does not mean while you are driving down the highway.

10. And just like with number four I would never think of mentioning something like this if I had not seen it with my own eyes.

Very disturbing I might add. Now don’t get me wrong I understand the excitement angle on this one but the danger involved is simply over the top. Sure it sounds like fun or does it?!? Again there is a time and place for everything and driving down the street is just not a good choice. Excitement or not there are other ways to get that over the top excitement without endangering others.

Driving Safety

Driving is risky business. As a defensive driver, you can avoid crashes and help lower your risk behind the wheel.

If you've been out on the roads, you know that not everyone drives well. Some people speed aggressively. Others wander into another lane because they aren't paying attention. Drivers may follow too closely, make sudden turns without signaling, or weave in and out of traffic.

Aggressive drivers are known road hazards, causing one third of all traffic crashes. But inattentive driving is becoming more of a problem as people "multitask" by talking on the phone, texting or checking messages, eating, or even watching TV as they drive.

You can't control the actions of other drivers. But updating your defensive driving skills can help you avoid the dangers caused by other people's bad driving.

Safety Riding - Bycycle Riding

Bicycle riding is a fun and popular activity among kids. And with more and more kids becoming overweight, encouraging kids to be more active and ride their bikes regularly can lead to a healthier lifestyle.
Unfortunately, bicycle riding can also lead to kids getting injured or even dying, especially when they don't wear a helmet. According to the CDC, 'more than 500,000 children go to hospital emergency rooms or doctors' offices due to bicycle injuries' each year.

Although it is a simple way to avoid getting hurt, far too many kids don't wear a helmet when riding their bike. In fact, one survey by the National SAFE KIDS Campaign found that 'only 41 percent of all children observed on bicycles, inline skates, skateboards and scooters wear helmets' and that '35 percent of all children observed wearing helmets wear them improperly', either because the chin strap was unattached, loose, or the helmet was tilted. In our own Bicycle Helmet Poll, only about half of children 'always' wear a helmet.

In addition to setting a good example and always wearing a helmet yourself, here are ten tips to teach your children to encourage safe bike riding:

Always wear a bike helmet
Stop and check traffic before riding into a street
Don't ride at night
Obey traffic signs and signals
Ride on the right-hand side of the street
Check your brakes before riding.
Give cars and pedestrians the right-of-way
Wear light or bright-colored clothing so that motorists can see you
Be extra careful turning left - motorists don't expect it
Avoid broken pavement, loose gravel and leaves - which can cause you to lose control of your bike.
But remember that simply wearing a helmet is not enough. Your child has to wear it correctly for it to keep him safe. You should choose a bike helmet that meets current safety standards. Other tips to help you select and correctly use a bike helmet include that you should:

Start children wearing helmets with their first tricycles or play vehicles.
Use foam pads inside to fit the helmet snugly so it doesn't move on the head.
Fit the helmet so the front is just above the top of the eyebrows.
Teach your child to wear a helmet so that it covers the upper part of the forehead and sits level on the head.
Adjust the two side straps so they meet in a "V" right under each ear.
Adjust the chin strap snugly under the chin.
Make it tight enough so the helmet pulls down when the child opens his mouth.
Check often to make sure straps stay snug and the helmet stays level on the head.

Pros and Cons for Driving Fear Program

The Driving Fear Program by Rich Presta

is becoming increasingly popular as more experts recommend it and more people provide enthusiastic testimonials about how it changed their life for the better. And indeed, having read this program, I can say that it does provide value for people who suffer from driving phobia. However, this doesn't mean that this is a perfect program, and indeed, I'd be derelict in my duty if this Driving Fear Program review didn't include the pros and cons of this guide. In this way you won't be trying out a cat in a bag but have a clear vision of what this program is all about.

Driving Fear Program Pros and Cons

Pros:

1. This is a program which is specifically dedicated to curing fear of driving. While there are a number of general phobia self-help guides on the market, they try to cover every phobia in the world. This guide focuses on driving phobia and so delivers the material in a pinpointed, laser-sharp way.

2. Has positive reviews - As this program helped other people cure their fear of driving, there's a good chance it will also be your way out of the mud, so to speak. Of course, no program is 100% foolproof, but if it worked before you may expect good results for you as well.

3. Much more affordable and guaranteed - Getting this guide is a much more affordable option than going to therapy or taking a bunch of pills which may or may not work. It also has a money back guarantee, so if your problem isn't cured, you can get your money back.

4. Can be downloaded - Instead of waiting endlessly for the mail to deliver this guide, you can get it as an ebook and download it in minutes to your computer. This means you get an early start on overcoming your driving phobia and anxiety.

Cons:

1. Requires some reading - The driving fear program comes in the form of an ebook so you are required to do some reading. For a slightly higher price you can get this entire guide in audio format, but that's up to you.

2. Only cures driving phobia - If you suffer from multiple phobias you should know that this guide deals only with fear of driving.

I hope this Fear of Driving program review has proved helpful for you.

How to Merge onto a Highway: How to Merge Into Traffic

Merging into traffic can be a tricky maneuver, especially in high traffic areas. Merging onto a highway requires hand eye coordination, depth perception and expert control of the vehicle. If you drive in heavily populated areas, you need to master the merge. These steps will help you merge safely.
Instructions
1. Notice the vehicles around you. Check your mirrors to be aware of nearby vehicles, especially those next to and behind you. If a vehicle is blocking your entrance to the highway, slow down so that you can try to merge in behind that vehicle.

2. Increase your speed. Before merging onto the highway, you need to be driving near highway speed. If the acceleration lane is long enough, accelerate to match the speed of the vehicles on the highway before you merge completely.

3. Use your turn signal. Put on your turn signal to let the drivers around you know your intentions. Seeing your signal, the drivers on the highway may adjust their lane position to allow you easier access to the highway.

4. Check your blind spot. Even though you have checked your mirrors, double check your blind spot by turning your head toward the highway and using your peripheral vision. Depending on the angle at which you are approaching the highway, your blind spot may be larger than normal.

5. Accelerate into the open space. When there is space for you on the highway, merge into the space, bringing your vehicle up to highway speed as quickly as possible.

How to Merge onto a Highway

Merging when you are on the highway is one of the number one causes of traffic accidents on major highways and roadways. Too often, I have seen near misses on highways where someone is trying to merge but the other lane of traffic will not let them in. Merging into traffic is almost like watching a dance. You have to get the steps down just right in order not to step on anyone's toes and ruin the dance move.

The thing to remember about merging is that when you are actively trying to merge into traffic on a highway, the people who are already traveling in a straight path on the highway have the right of way. Before you actually get onto the highway, depending on what kind of a highway you are trying to merge onto, there may be a stoplight or a sign indicating that you need to increase your speed to whatever the current speed is on the highway. This is all done in an effort to prevent unnecessary accidents from occurring.

When you are getting ready to merge, it is important to look over your shoulder and gauge where the next car is behind you. Be prepared to step on the gas and really crank it up in order to successfully accelerate to whatever the current speed is that is being traveled by most of the vehicles on the highway. If you are not quick enough or if you try to merge onto the highway without accelerating to the proper speed, then you run the risk of actually causing an accident. For instance, imagine that you are already on the highway and you are traveling in the far right lane. Suddenly a car tries to merge right in front of you. The current speed that is being traveled by most of the cars on the highway is roughly 70 miles per hour. However, the car that has unexpectedly merged in front of you is traveling at a speed of 50 miles per hour. As a result, you have to slam on your brakes hard, which causes the person behind you to have to slam on their brakes hard. If someone isn't paying attention behind you, they might end up rear ending you or trying to perform a last minute maneuver in order to get out of the way, thereby causing another accident in a different lane of traffic.

It is important to remember to keep your distance (even more so) on a highway versus a residential street. For residential driving, you are supposed to maintain at least two car lengths behind the person in front of you (which people seldom do). However, when you are on a highway, you are almost always traveling at a much higher rate of speed, which means that you need to increase your stopping time between you and the person in front of you. Therefore, you should adjust your distance to approximately four to five car lengths since it would hypothetically take you longer to stop in the event that the person in front of you were to slow down.

What Are Fellow Customers Saying About The "Driving Fear" Program?
In this section, we shall be taking a look at what fellow customers have said about this "Driving Fear" program after they have bought and followed through the plans within...

Here's a written review submitted by a customer by the name of Daniel Lee Cousins, from Astoria, New York, and we quote:
“My driving anxiety began about a year ago, and started to affect my life more and more the longer I put off doing something about it. When I first found the Driving Fear Program, I read the testimonials and the summary of what to expect from the program, and finally found hope.
I had tried other relaxation and anti-anxiety programs, but nothing addressed the direct source of the problem like your program did. I saw results with theDriving FearProgram VERY quickly, by the second day I was already seeing progress.
Now I can drive on highways again, and believe it or not now I'm actually more relaxed than BEFORE my problems with driving started! I'd recommend the program to anyone with a fear of driving because it's so easy to understand and use, and most of all effective. Thank you so much!"
Here's another written review that another customer (by the name of Theresea Biddie from West Midlands, UK) has provided for Rich and Dr Cheryl's "Driving Fear" program:
“I'm a driving instructor and my fear put me in danger of losing my job. I couldn't drive over bridges, sit at red lights, drive over long stretches of open road or motorways without an intense feeling of panic and wanting to get out, and at 70 mph that was a terrifying thought. My world got very small and I gave up work for a while. I refused any social invitation and became housebound.
The techniques you teach in the program were the real breakthrough for me, as soon as I put them into practice, the anxiety would just go away.
I feel normal again, my life has completely turned around, thank you for theDriving FearProgram, it has honestly changed my life.”
Our Final Verdict
The techniques with which you can find in the "Driving Fear" program are 100% all-natural, and the exact same techniques can also be applied to eliminate any fear and/or anxiety that you may also have - Such as height phobia, blood phobia, fear of public speaking, etc.
The fact that this program has been talked about in the various media means that it is trusted, and it does indeed work.
But having said that, you need to be committed to taking action to work on the exercises that Rich and Dr Cheryl has put forth in the "Driving Fear" program.

How to Merge onto a Highway: Highway Defensive Driving Tip

Driving safely on the highway nowadays takes loads of concentration, expertise and effort on everybody's part. Knowing the meaning of traffic signs is a highly important part of defensive driving, and not knowing the meaning of any traffic sign should be an important factor to stay off the road and retrain your capacity on understanding what each highway sign signifies for the sake of your well-being and others.

Drivers do lots of highway driving and it sure get scary out there and it is not getting easier. In fact, drivers are getting bolder. In reference to dictionary, yield signifies to surrender to another and or surrender to stress. This means that on a busy activity highway or any traffic would be factor to yield to others coming from behind at a higher speed that is carrying 2,000 lbs or bigger of moving stress. Drivers never did stop and estimate exactly how many tons of moving metal could probably be coming their way, if you know what I mean.

Merging onto a highway with flowing traffic may be a very prejudicial maneuver, principally if you do not know what the meaning of a yield sign is, or what one feels like. I believe when you study a defensive driving book, and I am sure that the book are not out to trick you on any changes. It signifies yield for other traffic, give up to another and or surrender to stress, or stop if necessary! So why do a lot of automobile drivers assume that highway traffic has to let them in if they run out of roadway when they are trying to merge on?

The key to secure driving is not to assume everything. The proper alternative to merge onto a highway should be a quickset blueprint. The path ahead of you has to be clear and have a long enough roadway to let you to get up to the speed of highway traffic. The next is a defensive driving procedure on merging into traffic safely.

When the highway traffic coming up alongside your automobile is behind you, put your signal on and quickly accelerate your car up to an identical speed if the path ahead of you is clear. The ambition here is to get up to an identical speed on traffic so they cannot catch you. If you are doing an identical speed as the traffic behind you, they cannot catch you except they are speeding and or you are slowing down. If you think that you cannot accelerate to their speed, release the gas pedal and let the automobiles go by, then quickly pick up speed again to stay ahead of the traffic coming up from the lane you wish to merge into, if it is clear ahead of you.

When necessary, stop if you have to allow all traffic go by and merge in just after the lane you wish to merge into is clear. The automobile traffic in the lane that you wish to merge into should not have to brake to let you in. From time to time, you will find a courteous driver hold back on the gas pedal to let you. Quickly accelerate and move in, only if secure and clear ahead of your automobile. This maneuver should be practice with a recognized driving school tutor, or an adult with loads of driving experience. It is a highly important part of defensive driving.

What will you get

Do you reside in dread of getting to drive a car? Does the prospect of driving to the grocery fill you with dread? Fear of driving is incredibly common however few individuals admit to this fear.

People who are afraid to drive are typically ashamed of their fear. Many individuals hide their fear because they are afraid of being ridiculed. Fear of driving isn't a sign of weakness Fear of driving is caused by a phobia; the results of faulty wiring in the brain. A neurological response meant to protect someone from harm becomes dysfunction and begins to cause issues instead.

All phobias are 'conditioned responses' Driving a car triggers an unwanted and automatic fear response within the brain Unless the brain is retrained to respond differently, the conditioned fear keeps returning.

The Driving Fear Program teaches the brain to reply differently. Four straightforward steps teach the person who fears driving how to stop the conditioned fear before it starts Over time the brain stops responding with the irrational fear.

Individuals who fear driving typically try to suppress their fearful and irrational thoughts Sadly, attempting to suppress fearful thoughts only makes them increase in frequency. The Driving Fear Program works by teaching people to prevent fearing the fear itself Stopping anxiety about the phobia really stops the phobia.

Folks who fear driving are usually artistic, sensitive people who don't seem to be using their creativity. The Driving Fear Program cures the phobia by freeing up creative energy for productive activities.

The Driving Fear Program teaches these skills, and additional:

Driving Phobia and Anxiety

The Driving Fear Program is the most widely recommended program anywhere for overcoming fear and anxiety while driving. It has been used by literally thousands of of people like you around the world to help them conquer their anxiety and drive with more comfort and peace of mind.

If you decide to order the program, we will be compensated, but we think it's a fantastic and amazingly affordable resource to help you overcome your driving anxiety and dramatically improve your life.

Somehow most people tend to think that we should be immune to all that surrounds us on the road; that we should not let 'road stress' creep into our lives. People who can't sleep or who have 'flashbacks' reliving traumatic incidents might feel that they should 'pull themselves together'. How do you start to explain to your friends and family... After all there are people with 'real problems' out there aren't there?

Often people who suffer discomfort. Or delayed trauma, after a road incident feel alone. "I must be silly letting it affect me this way". But you can gain some comfort in the knowledge that there are thousands of people who have problems that arose as a result of, or that were compounded by, an incident on the road, a crash, a near miss, a child running out, an attack. If you are one of these people, you are not alone.

Some people develop a driving phobia as a result of their experiences. Some phobias seem to have no apparent cause. Phobia. Flashbacks, loss of sleep, irritability, change of character, anxiety, a feeling of loss, hopelessness. These are some of the feelings that people have described to me. You can move on.

'Driver therapy' can help you to gain confidence and a new belief that although the past is fixed in place now, your future is waiting for change. You might have already tried to change, you might have had treatment or training that has not worked or only been partially successful; you might be coping be taken sedatives. Whatever your current position, its time to move forward. To gently let go of old, less useful, self limiting beliefs.

Using modern counseling methods combined with in car therapy can help you to get back on the road and get on with your life. Or perhaps all you need is a renewed belief in your ability behind the wheel.

Recover, uncover or discover...

Whatever problems you have had behind the wheel, you can move forward again. Whether you need to recover from a past trauma, uncover the underlying confidence that is present in other areas of your life and apply it to driving, or discover a confidence that was never 'taught' when you you first learnt to drive the starting point is understanding where you are now.

In simple terms there are three 'dysfunction' levels at which you might operate emotionally behind the wheel, these are:

Fear, Anxiety, Phobia

Fear is a normal healthy response to unknown situations or situations where we perceive danger. People with a driving fear will often worry before a drive but resolve to get on with it as soon as they are out in the car - often forgetting the fear because they are so engrossed in the driving task.

Anxiety

Anxiety is classified in many different ways and has many symptoms. Typically, driving anxiety develops when 'fearful' situations are avoided and then the developing fear is generalized into other situations. If you have had an anxiety reaction to driving as opposed to 'simple fear' (but nonetheless real) you will probably have experienced some debilitating symptoms such as sweating, tummy upset, hyperventilation, exhaustion, a lump in the throat, etcetera.

Phobia

Phobia is a disabling mechanism. It protects you (sometimes totally irrationally) from your perceived danger. Drivers who have developed phobias will have severe panic attacks and be unable to carry on with a particular drive, or indeed they might stop driving altogether.

While many people consider phobias to be a sign of weakness, the opposite is probably true! The ability to automatically, and consistently avoid perceived danger is quite a powerful skill. When the skill can be better employed, 'normal' functioning can be restored.

Self help

The following advice is offered to assist you as you overcome your problems. The simple ideas suggested often help in cases of fear and mild anxiety. Some problems might need outside intervention, or in depth personal work (such as self-hypnosis) before you can approach a completely satisfactory result.

Before trying the measures outlined below, check that any physical symptoms are being dealt with by visiting your doctor. If you are on medication for anxiety (or any other disorder) check with your pharmacist that it is safe for you to drive. A good starting point is understanding the mechanism that drives your beliefs about driving.

Understanding your beliefs

In simple terms, we make sense of the world around us because we hold 'beliefs'. That is, we believe certain things to be true and as long as those things remain true, everything is all right - or at least everything is as we believe it to be ... this might be far from 'all right'.

You probably believe that when you go to sleep at night, you will wake up the next morning - this is something you give little or no thought to, but , if it were not true you probably wouldn't be able to sleep.

You almost certainly believe that there is a thing called gravity that holds you down to the ground. If you did not believe this you would tie yourself down with ropes and never move again; the fear of floating off into space would prevent you from moving!

Beliefs are normally formed by constant reinforcement - every time you have been to sleep so far, you have woken up; each time you wake up your belief is strengthened. Each step and every movement you make confirms that gravity exists - a constant reinforcement of your belief.

For some, beliefs can be formed in a flash. This is sometimes called 'one trial learning'. Phobias are often the result of 'one trial learning' after a motor accident. This type of self-limitation is so powerful that simply thinking about a situation brings on the symptoms of fear/anxiety - although outside help will be required, you can unlearn as well as you learn, replacing the problem behavior with a more useful and fulfilling approach.

Self limiting beliefs

When our beliefs are useful they serve us well, but there are occasions when we develop less than useful beliefs. Knowing about self-limiting beliefs might not cause them to go away, but it will enable you to understand the process that perpetuates the problems you have experienced.

It is common for people to describe anxiety sensations when talking about driving; these include tension, fear, etc. So lets look at how these sensations help to reinforce the self limiting beliefs that have, up to now, prevented you from knowing that you can be the driver that you want to be.

Tension and belief

For 15 seconds, tense up your body - clench your fists, tighten every muscle in your body and hold the feeling - 15 seconds. The relax ... Enjoy the sensation of letting all of the tension melt away allow each part of your body to relax in turn, from the top of your head, gently down though your shoulders and body and to the tips of your toes.

Now reflect on what happened when you were tensed up. Did you notice how, to a degree, being tense 'cuts you off' from the world around you. How you have less awareness of what's going on. Try it again and notice whether this is the case.

The problems associated with tension and driving are as follows:

When you experienced tension behind the wheel, you restrict the amount of information that you gather about your surroundings Some of this information is essential for comfortable driving. Mistakes, or wrong moves made because of the missing information reinforce your belief that you have been afraid of driving - this creates more tension. A vicious circle!

The solution is to learn to remove the tension and gather appropriate information. This can be done with therapy and/or specialist driver training and/or self help relaxation methods.

'Going inside' and belief

Try this. Take a minute or so to think about a holiday or other time in your life when you were really happy. Notice, first of all, all the things that you can see on that happy occasion; people, landscapes, seascapes, locations, whatever it is for you - experience the color and depth of your picture, allowing it to develop as you think about what you can hear; sounds, voices, loud, quiet, near, far ... Notice the feelings, physical feelings, warm, cold, textures; emotional feelings - you know these feelings well ...

Now. What happened to your awareness of the world around you as you drifted into your 'dream'? My guess is that, once again, similar to the 'tension' exercise above, you lost some awareness of your surroundings. Different cause, same effect.

After a driving incident, or during a drive when you have felt uncomfortable, you will have 'gone inside' for a few moments, or longer. This time rather than the full enjoyment of a pleasant memory, your brain will have presented you with Images, sounds and feelings of problem memories. Sometimes this happens so fast that all you are aware of is the resultant unpleasant feelings.

The net effect is loss of useful driving information and another vicious circle of belief reinforcement.

Breaking the cycle

Some people are able to break this cycle for themselves by following the simple advice offered on this page. Others will benefit from a little outside help. people break their limiting belief cycle through a combination of driver education and therapy. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Breathing

One of the most effective ways of combating anxiety is to learn how to control your breathing. By learning slow, deep diaphragm breathing, you can slow down all the functions that promote panic.

Please read the "Coping" page for more information.

Relaxation

The inability to relax has effects far beyond the driving seat. Many people feel that the only time they are relaxed is when they are asleep. The truth is, even when sleeping they might not be fully relaxed. If you have suffered from anxiety, your body need re-education in order to gain a normal relaxed state that will be appropriate for safe and efficient driving.

Fear of Driving a Car

For many, many people around the world, driving is one of the greatest pleasures in the world, especially when the activity is regularly done and one drives with full knowledge of the machine and its strengths and weaknesses. However, there are some people who profess that they have a fear of driving a car. This fear of driving a car might in itself by the result of personal trauma (for many cases) or it might come from an irrational drive that associates the very act of driving as something potentially frightening or dangerous. This is not the same with worrying about road conditions or the general safety of one's self while driving. Fear of driving a car causes a person never to try driving (or never try for long periods of time or for long distances).

For some people, this is just fine, but for some, especially those who hold jobs that require a regular mode of transportation, the fear of driving a car is that last thing that needs to appear in their mindset. Some people never realize the severity of their fear of driving a car until they reach their adulthood, when finally the skill is put to the test as they attempt to fulfill the roles of hardworking adults.

If this is your case, then rest assured that what you feel towards driving is not an isolated case; because as there are many people in the world who seem to take to driving like fish does to water, there are some people like you who find the activity difficult to carry out. There are some things that can be done in order to combat the debilitating effects of the fear of driving a car. For many people, the fear, if untreated, may escalate and progress to such a degree that the very idea only of driving a car may produce physiological symptoms: such as hyperventilation and the like.

What you can do to avoid this worst case scenario is to literally, give yourself some slack. If you are afraid of driving because of an accident or a similar traumatic experience when you were younger, it's time to let go of your paranoia and give the activity another shot. You don't have to do it abruptly; like all things that succeed, start slowly, then gradually increasing the challenges you pose yourself: such as learning how to drive with a registered driving instructor.

It's important to know more about your fear of driving in a car. That's why I suggest to read this website:  http://tinyurl.com/3k7hmvy  which gives you the answers to what driving anxiety is and how to stop it.

How to Merge Onto the Highway Without Crashing

The following is a description of how you should merge onto a highway safely and without endangering or harming yourself or others.
  1. Make sure you are going at the same speed as the traffic into which you are merging as you reach the point where the ramp merges with the highway. This is very important so that those coming up behind you on the highway do not hit you from behind. This is very similar to safely changing lanes at highway speeds when it is done properly.
  2. Maintain a safe distance from anyone in the ramp/merge lane in front of you; expect traffic to possibly slowdown or stop, causing you to have to do the same to avoid a rear-end or clip while merging.
    • Never assume others will use correct speed, maintain it or merge correctly.
  3. Put your turn signal on so that the drivers on the highway notice that you are merging into their lane. Now carefully and quickly:
    1. Look in the internal rearview mirror then at your driver's side mirror;
    2. Glance to see that there is no car in your blind spot (close behind you in the lane that you are merging);
    3. Quickly, see whether someone has slowed or stopped in the ramp/merge lane in front of you.
  4. Determine if you have room to merge onto the highway, if you do not (a car is currently beside you) you will have to speed up or down just a little until you have ample space to merge into.
  5. Gradually, never abruptly, merge into the lane, following the natural path of the merging ramp. Make sure to maintain your speed, which should be the same speed as the other cars in your lane on the highway.

How to Be a Better Driver

Good drivers are both common and uncommon. It is possible you might encounter rash teenagers to truck drivers to overly-cautious senior citizens; yet all contribute to how we can learn to be better drivers.
  1. Focus. Paying attention to the traffic around you, frequently surveying your mirrors, and anticipating what other drivers are going to do is the most important step to becoming a courteous and safe driver.
  2. Allow someone to pass, if you happen to see them going beyond the speed limit. This is no 1950s drag race. Proving your need for speed leads to dangerous circumstances between your car and other cars.
  3. Use your turn signals, and use them at the right time. Notify other drivers of your intent to turn or to change lanes early enough that they are able to take appropriate action. Sitting at a red light is NOT the right time to turn on your blinker; if you had done so earlier, the person behind you would have been able to change lanes and avoid sitting behind you when the light turns green.
  4. Never switch lanes when in the middle of an intersection. Also, time your entry into an intersection so that you don't get caught blocking it once the light turns red (i.e. "don't block the box").
  5. NEVER try to "beat the light." If the light turns yellow and you have enough space to stop safely, then stop. Cyclists, pedestrians, and even other drivers expect you to be completely stopped by the time the light turns red. You endanger yourself and others by running yellow lights, only to save a minute or two, it simply isn't worth it.
  6. Keep in mind that it is courteous to allow a vehicle to turn into traffic if the driver is waiting for a break. Do not, however, suddenly slam the brakes in moving traffic in order to let a driver enter. This will most likely lead to a fender bender or worse, a collision from the unsuspecting driver behind you. This occurred at least once, killing the driver who drove behind the car that had suddenly braked in constantly moving traffic. Drivers in moving traffic never expect a sudden brake. Be extremely careful.
  7. Remember: maintaining a decently comfortable distance between you and the driver ahead of you is an excellent rule of thumb. You should keep at least 2 to 4 seconds distance between you and the person in front of you. You can use the signs or the paint dashes to judge this distance. Perhaps if the vehicle in front suddenly stalls or stops, you as a driver have enough room to stop safely, or turn into the next lane without causing a backup in traffic. Other weather-related conditions, such as snow and rain, also make it wise to prevent collisions by keeping a safe distance behind for slippery, sliding and swerving cars.
  8. Note that residential areas are common grounds for children to run spontaneously into the streets without looking for oncoming cars. Their minds focus on retrieving their ball in the street or catching up to friends by suddenly crossing roads on bikes, for instance. When driving through residential streets, be wary of unpredictable objects and people in the streets.
  9. Remember that trucks often give their drivers difficulty stopping, turning, or backing up, we, as drivers, have all witnessed this. When passing a semi-truck, keep in mind that the truck driver has more difficulty braking. It is best to wait until you can see the truck in your rear-view mirror before completing a pass. Also avoid remaining beside a truck when in multi-lane traffic, if you cannot see the truck driver through his/her mirror, then he/she cannot see you.
  10. Be courteous of the senior citizens, as well. Senior citizens need to drive just like everyone else. This is especially the case when they have no other means to obtain essentials. Most senior citizens, however, tend to prefer driving during early afternoons when there is less traffic and more daylight. When driving behind a senior citizen, always keep a safe distance and watch for unexpected moves, such as lane changes. Some seniors may change lanes without prior signaling.
  11. Make an effort to change lanes when safe if you see utility work, police and emergency vehicles up ahead, or see a lane starting to slow down to a crawl while the opposite lanes are open or have less traffic. Odds are there's an accident, stalled car, or on the shoulder someone is pulled over, broken down car etc. By doing so you make yourself less prone to be in a secondary accident and it helps people who are in a dangerous or bad situation. In Illinois we have Scott's law.
  12. Understand that the majority of drivers just aim to get to their destination, just like everyone else does. Accidents happen, but you can take a few steps to prevent many of them from occurring, either to yourself or others. By understanding the way various drivers react, you will have a better grasp of how to be a better driver. The best drivers learn to anticipate possible changes in traffic, and prepare for them in advance by adjusting their speed, their lane/direction, or where their attention is directed.
  13. If you are signaled to stop by the police, be nice to the officer and they may let you go despite violating a traffic law. It will depend on what you did and the traffic conditions as to the offense. Not all officers are out to write tickets.
  14. Don't use the shoulder or median to get around people not moving with traffic. You will get nailed no matter how many cars you pass.
