Fear of Driving a Car

For many, many people around the world, driving is one of the greatest pleasures in the world, especially when the activity is regularly done and one drives with full knowledge of the machine and its strengths and weaknesses. However, there are some people who profess that they have a fear of driving a car. This fear of driving a car might in itself by the result of personal trauma (for many cases) or it might come from an irrational drive that associates the very act of driving as something potentially frightening or dangerous. This is not the same with worrying about road conditions or the general safety of one's self while driving. Fear of driving a car causes a person never to try driving (or never try for long periods of time or for long distances).

For some people, this is just fine, but for some, especially those who hold jobs that require a regular mode of transportation, the fear of driving a car is that last thing that needs to appear in their mindset. Some people never realize the severity of their fear of driving a car until they reach their adulthood, when finally the skill is put to the test as they attempt to fulfill the roles of hardworking adults.

If this is your case, then rest assured that what you feel towards driving is not an isolated case; because as there are many people in the world who seem to take to driving like fish does to water, there are some people like you who find the activity difficult to carry out. There are some things that can be done in order to combat the debilitating effects of the fear of driving a car. For many people, the fear, if untreated, may escalate and progress to such a degree that the very idea only of driving a car may produce physiological symptoms: such as hyperventilation and the like.

What you can do to avoid this worst case scenario is to literally, give yourself some slack. If you are afraid of driving because of an accident or a similar traumatic experience when you were younger, it's time to let go of your paranoia and give the activity another shot. You don't have to do it abruptly; like all things that succeed, start slowly, then gradually increasing the challenges you pose yourself: such as learning how to drive with a registered driving instructor.
